Nigel Horton meets the boys
The away matches against Wirral GS were all lost to the horrendous weather at the weekend but Mr Hayes and Mr Arnold, our two outstanding groundsmen, worked superbly to beat the weather and enable all of the home matches to take place.
The U15A team started the season magnificently with a 31-7 win. The forwards were in impressive form as they dominated the rucks to provide some quick ball for the backs which fly half, Sam Crowther, used intelligently.
Will Fairhead and David Mitchell ran well in the centres and Jacob Reid was always a threat at fullback. David Mitchell scored the first try of the season and No.8, James Aird, added another to give Mr Evans's side a 12-0 half time lead.
The good play continued into the second half as captain, Jacob Nickson, led from the front with able support from James Haythornthwaite, Tom Jepson and Jake Taylor. Mitchell and Aird both added another try each before substitute, Tom Rutherford, left two would-be tacklers sprawled across the ground as he scored the U15A's fifth try. Wirral scored a late touchdown which they more than deserved in what was a fine game between two good sides.
Wirral enjoyed the better of the rugby in the U14A match. Alex Casey scored Arnold's only try as they lost 35-5. In the U13A match, Jake Higson scored 3 points in a very close encounter but the Wirral boys scored some late tries as Mr Morton's side lost 17-3.
