Tough matches for our rugby boys

Matches against Stonyhurst College are never easy and the Arnold boys know that they must be at their very best. The effort displayed by all of our boys was superb on Saturday, with many of the games extremely competitive and very close, but it was Stonyhurst who prevailed in many of the matches.

At home, the 1st XV lost 22-3 as a powerful and well-drilled Stonyhurst side dominated possession for much of the match. Josh Beaumont played well at 6 and Sam Cole directed play impressively from 10 but the scoring chances were few and far between.

Mr McIntyre's 2nd XV Spartans found the going tough away at Stonyhurst. They lost out 50-0. The U16A fought hard in a very close and competitive encounter. Two Robbie Goodier penalties were their only reward despite some fine play by the whole squad. Stonyhurst eventually won 17-6.

The U15A match was a fantastic spectacle as both teams committed to running the ball as often as possible. Mr Evans's side started superbly and dominated much of the early possession. James Aird, Tom Jepson and Jacob Reid all made early breaks but it was an intelligent kick through by Sam Crowther which resulted in game's first try. Sam's kick had Stonyhurst back pedalling and the alert Joe Shaw reclaimed the ball and off-loaded to James Aird to crossed for the try. Within 10 minutes Stonyhurst were level after some driving play saw them dive over from close range. Jepson and Aird both came close to scoring before the break but the visitors defence held firm as it ws 5-5 at the break.

The game remained even until 10 minutes into the second half. Arnold were pressing the Stonyhurst line and looking to add to the their scoreline when Stonyhurst suddenly reclaimed possession and went 95 yards to score, despite a superb tackle from Will Fairhead. Stonyhurst added a further score out wide with 5 minutes to play to win 17-5. John Kenyon, Jack Sprigg and Jake Taylor worked tirelessly in the forwards.

Mr Harding's U14A played very well away at Stonyhurst and put their Lancashire Cup disappointment behind them. Despite a few injuries, all of the boys worked extremely hard as they lost 20-10 in another close match.

Scorers from all the matches and reports of the U13A and U13B at St Mary's Hall will be posted on Monday.
