Festival of rugby at Arnold
Our U16B rugby players played some good rugby during their Fylde & Wyre League debut at home today. The 8 team league began with two 20 minute matches against Fleetwood HS U16A and Baines School U16A.
As with the U14 league, the laws of the game vary from those normally played. No kicking is allowed, scrums are uncontested, their is no lifting in the lineouts and there are no conversions after a try or penalty kicks at the posts. What this produces is a very fast, open and simplified version of the game and one which all of the players on display seemed to thoroughly enjoy.
In their first match against Fleetwood HS U16A, our U16B team made a very impressive start with some good driving play by the forwards. Yards were made by Josh Buckley, Dewi Morgan and Ricky Hutchinson with captain, Tobias Cleaver-Ross, diving over the line to score.
Fleetwood levelled the scores within a few minutes after a fine break in the centre resulted in a 60 metre try from their No 12. The scores remained level until late in the game when Fleetwood created an overlap to score out wide. Despite some late charges by Tom Eyre, Marcus Quarmby and James Smurthwaite, Arnold could not score again and went down by 10-5.
Baines School U16A were next and this proved to be a very fast and extremely exciting match. Baines took an early lead after a break down the right wing. Nathan Bolus performed well at 10 and Alex Williams and Nathan Wimlett displayed some good skills out wide. Josh Buckley was again pivotal in most of the good Arnold play and Kevin Wan was his usual livewire self all over the pitch.
It was the forwards who scored again with a deserved try from Josh Buckley after all his good play throughout the afternoon. The U16B then pushed for a winning score and some fine breaks were made by Chris Heaton and Marcus Quarmby but some excellent cover defence by Baines thwarted each attack. Dewi Morgan came close to scoring at the end but the match finished a draw at 5-5.
These matches were again organised by Fylde RFC and it was a good advert for rugby on a sunny afternoon at Arnold School.
