U14s in fine form at Kirkham 7s
Our U14 7-a-side players enjoyed a profitable afternoon at the Kirkham GS tournament where they won the Plate competition.
In an extremely tough group, it really could have have been any of the five sides who qualified for the main or plate competitions, as all of the matches were extremely close. After leading Manchester GS 10-0, through tries by Ben Cheston and Matthew Radley, MGS fought back to win a dramatic match, 12-10.
St Ambrose played some very attractive rugby to triumph 29-7 but Arnold then showed their class with a 35-7 victory over a strong RGS Newcastle side. Tries were scored by Cheston (2), Charlie McLaine and Matthew Radley (2). This meant that the final match against Leicester GS would prove vital.
Joe Welch and Max Reid both scored, and with Leicester leading 19-12 and Arnold looking like scoring, the midlands school broke free to claim a 27-12 win. This meant that despite all of their good play, Arnold finished fourth in their group and they would have a tough Plate semi-final draw against the third placed side in the other group, Sandbach School.
The U14s played some of their best rugby in this match and were always in control. Scores from Cheston and Richard Whiteside completed a fine 20-7 victory to set up a final against Leicester GS, who they had already lost to in the group matches. This time the Arnold boys stuck to their game plan and gained revenge for their earlier defeat. It was a another close match but with tries from Radley, Whiteside (2) and Cheston they ran out winners by 24-12 to win the Plate competition.
