A busy 48 hours of rugby has seen four of our teams take part in various cup competitions.
On Wednesday, Mr Morton's and Mr MacMahon's U13A won through in a very physical Lancashire Cup encounter against West Hill HS. West Hill are an impressive, big, physical side but our Year 8s won through by 17-7 with tries by Aaron Cheung and Sam Walton.
On the same day, the 1st XV travelled to Manchester GS. This was also a Lancashire Cup match. In a topsy turvy match, Tom Horam scored the only 1st XV try with the ever accurate boot of Liam Hill sending over 5 penalties and one conversion in what was another superb kicking display. However, two lapses of concentration from a kick off and out wide in defence proved costly.
Despite this, the 1st XV led 22-20 after a smart Sam Cole drop goal gave them the lead with 7 minutes left to play. Sadly, a penalty at the death and in front of the posts saw MGS snatch a late win by 23-22. The 1st XV will now continue into the Lancashire U18 Plate.
Thursday saw the U15A and U14A teams in action. The U15A were taking part in the Daily Mail National Cup against Lytham HS. Mr Evans's side put in a commanding display and it was winger, Joe Shaw, who finished a sweeping team move to put them 5-0 ahead. The first half pressure continued as Jacob Reid set up countless attacks, linking well with James Aird and David Mitchell. Sam Crowther was releasing his backline at every opportunity and it became 10-0 after James Haythornthwaite crossed after a wonderful passage of play. James Aird scored the third try and Tom Jepson made it 22-0 at half time.
The Arnold boys continued to dominate possession into the second half and Jacob Reid scored directly from the second half kick off. Winger, Luke Sherwin, then finished off a fine blindside move to score the team's sixth try. All six replacements were used and it was also very impressive to see Alex Fowler and Alex Connolly play so well during the last 15 minutes. Tom Jepson had a dynamic match in the backrow with Jacob Reid superb in the backs.
Away at Liverpool College in the Lancashire Cup, the U14A struggled against some talented opposition as they went down by 29-0.
