U12 rugby players take to the fields

Our U12 rugby players took to the fields on Friday afternoon in three practice matches against Kirkham GS. It was very much a case of seeing what the boys on either side could offer, with players switching positions so that they could get a feel for playing in a variety of places.

The scores were not kept but the action was certainly full-blooded in the A, B and C team matches as every single Year 7 boy took part. As you can see from Mr Evans's pictures (please click 'Read More' below for the gallery), the boys certainly enjoyed their first taste of rugby action!

On Saturday, the older boys worked tremendously against the strength of Lancaster RGS. With over 140 boys available to them in each year, these matches are always some of the toughest of the season.

The 1st XV lost 31-3. Wilf Whittle, Josh Beaumont and Tom Andrew were impressive throughout and Michael Carter worked very hard in the lineouts. However, the Lancaster driving play was exceptional as they scored three close range tries.

The 2nd XV went down 29-3 despite a strong second half performance and it was good to see the talented and industrious, Ben Nowell, back in action. The U16A team was outgunned 36-0 but the forwards must be congratulated for their efforts and the backs for their outstanding second half defence.

The U15A team competed very well in the early exchanges with James Haythornthwaite particularly impressive in the lineouts. Sadly, an injury to Sam Crowther meant a major reshuffle and it took a while for the team to recover. Early errors in their own 22 cost the boys as Lancaster were ruthless to lead by 20-0 at the break. Despite this, the U15A continued to dominate the lineouts and earn parity in the rucks but Lancaster used the ball more profitably and intelligently. James Aird scored a good long range try after some hard work by David Mitchell. James Haythornthwaite was the man of the match.

The U15B lost 34-0 with Mr Oliver picking out Luke Sherwin as the outstanding performer. James Turner made some crunching tackles and Jake Mullen worked tirelessly until an injury forced him from the field.

The U14A went down 45-5 and the U13A 21-5 as Jake Higson crossed for his sixth try of the season. The U13A were only 7-5 down until two late tries stealed the win for Lancaster. The U13B always worked extremely hard but lost by 50-0.
