With the very wet spring and the different half-term and Easter holiday dates, there was always a possibility of a fixture backlog in the Lancashire Schools' Golf Knock Out. With two out of our three teams left in, each team needed to play two matches this week.

First up was our B team of Stephen Hurst, Nicholas Sharples and Harry McNulty. Playing Winstanley College, Wigan, at Fairhaven on Tuesday, they put together a solid team performance and won 3-0. Their next match was played after Sports Day, at Blackpool North Shore Golf Club against Montgomery High School. Due to a lack of available players one game was already conceded by the opposition, so we only needed to win one of the remaining two.

A very slow round in searing heat certainly made it a challenge, and the game was very close up until the 16th, when Nick Sharples succumbed to the relentless short game of his opponent. The pressure was now on Harry McNulty, who was having to give 7 shots to his young opponent, but he battled on and took the game to the 18th, winning in style with a very confident long putt.

We struggled to arrange a fixture for our C team against Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, and the decision was made as to who would progress into the next round on the toss of a coin. Thankfully we won, and the match was arranged against Compton House School, Oldham, at Fairhaven Golf Club who have been generous hosts this season.

After 9 holes Luke Olsson was 2 down, Sam Crowther was 2 down and Alex Olsson was 3 up. By the time the match had reached the 16th things had not changed much. Luke lost his game on that hole and Sam was still 2 down with 3 to play. Alex meanwhile was comfortably winning 4 and 3.

By the par 3 17th the pressure was on Sam. Both players were on the green and the Compton player sank a good long putt for a two. Sam duly stepped up and and matched him to keep the game alive.

After a super drive Sam played the hole perfectly to square the match and take it to sudden death down the 1st.

Looking calm and relaxed, Sam revealed his hidden feelings as he scuffed a drive all of 30 yards down the fairway. His opponent responded by driving beautifully down the middle. A decent 3 wood into the semi rough put Sam within striking distance of the green. His opponent took the same club but unfortunately hooked it into the shrubbery. What pressure?

Sam then played a beautiful iron over the bunker, watched in anticipation as the ball grazed the hole and finished on the fringe. Meanwhile, after eventually finding his ball and taking a penalty drop the Compton player played up, leaving himself a long putt, which he missed. Sam followed suit but put it close and it was clear that his opponent was going to have to hole his, and hope that Sam would miss, to take it to the next hole. He missed.

A tremendous last four holes by Sam had saved the day! And the last hole was a classic case of 'drive for show, putt for dough'!

So for the first time as long as I can remember (unless you know differently) this is the first time that Arnold has had two teams at Finals Day.

The teams will be playing at Bolton Golf Club, today Friday 8th, and you are most welcome to attend; if your nerves can stand it!
