Why do we have exams after christmas?

We have exams after Christmas for a number of reasons. Firstly, in the Sixth Form, pupils usually have public examinations in January, and so the Christmas holiday gives them time to focus on their revision. In Y11, mock examinations for GCSE happen in January, again with the idea that the holiday is a good time to revise.

In Y7 to Y10, examinations mid-way through the year are a very useful indicator for parents, teachers and pupils about what you can do in exam conditions, and they give you 5 months to make changes/improvements.

If the mid-year exams were held in December, my guess is that pupils would not do as well as they could because they would be tired at the end of a long term, and it is hard to revise at the same time as being taught new material.
