A great day of cricket

It was a unique day for the cricketers as for the first ever time three teams were fielded from the same age group. The U15A XI played KEQMS in the Lancashire Cup with the U15B and U15C teams having tough matches against Lancaster RGS.

At home on a perfect batting wicket, the A team served up a scintillating Lancashire Twenty20 Cup match.

Arnold batted first after losing the toss and openers Tom Hessey and Nathan Bolus got off to a great start as we reached our 50 in only 7 overs. With Bolus looking dangerous on 34, Grey had him caught and Arnold were 76-1. However, Tom Hessey was in good form and he reached his 50 as he and Tom Armfield put on 71 for the second wicket.

It was not until the last over that KEQMS struck again as Heath trapped Armfield lbw for 17 and then had Tom Hessey caught out for a majestic 71. Hessey batted for all but 2 balls of the innings as Arnold finished on 152-2 from their 20 overs.

KEQMS got off to a slow start in pursuit of the Arnold total as openers Stevenson and Callahan scored just 4 runs in the first 4 overs. The Arnold opening bowlers, Adam Naylor and Tom Hessey, were accurate but then Stevenson exploded into life as he and Callahan smashed 55 runs in the next 6 overs. Stevenson hit 3 huge sixes to accelerate the KEQMS score.

In fact, Arnold did not take a wicket until the 14th over when Robbie Goodier had Callahan out for 15 from a stunning Ben Blake catch. Callahan and Stevenson had put on 86 for the first KEQMS wicket.

After 15 overs KEQMS still needed 49 to win but they continued to attack the Arnold bowling with Ralph Dowds cracking boundary after boundary in pursuit of the Arnold 152. Nanthesh Kiruparan then removed Stevenson for a fine 63 as Tom Hessey took the catch.

The entire match was then turned on its head as off spinner, Josh Emmett, came on to bowl. In his first over he took a fine hat-trick as KEQMS went from 110-2 to 116 -5. Dowds, Abbott and Harker were all sent packing as KEQMS now needed 37 from 3 overs.

However, dangerman Grey was still in and he launched one last attack on the home bowlers. 13 runs were scored in the 18th over and then a massive 15 runs in the 19th leaving just 9 to win off the last 6 balls.

Nathan Bolus, was left with the unenviable task of bowling the final over and when his first ball went for 4 it looked like KEQMS were going to snatch a famous win. Sadly, for KEQMS Carr was bowled for 6 and then Molese for a duck. Off the last ball KEQMS needed 4 to win but they could only scramble 1 as Grey was run out by Naylor and Blake for 21 as KEQMS finished on 150-8.

Arnold won this thrilling match by 2 runs and will now play Lytham HS or Marsden Heights in the last 16.

In the U15B match, Lancaster RGS reached 141-9 in their 20 overs. Joe Matthews took 2-24 but the best bowling performance came from Tom Eyre who took a stunning 4-6 in just 3 overs. In reply, Callum Estafan, Will Hesketh and Alex Garrod all smashed over 25 as Arnold scored 144-4 to win by 6 wickets.

The U15C found the going tough away at Lancaster as the home side reached 163-6. J-P Bell took two wickets along with two from captain, James Walker. Ben Drazen took a very impressive catch. The U15C were never up with the run rate but did very well to bat their 20 overs as they scored 80-7. Cameron Lawlor was the best performing batsman as he scored 30 not out. His innings included 2 huge sixes and with Tobias Cleaver-Ross he enjoyed a 45 run partnership after an early collapse.
