Arnold U14 Basketball

This year has seen Arnold represented in the Blackpool Schools Basketball Association U14 League for the first time. Despite their lack of match practice the boys managed to remain undefeated in the group stages and progressed into the play-offs. In the semi-final they lost 24-37 to a very strong and experienced Montgomery H.S. team.

The squad deserve enormous credit for the hard work they have put in over the last 2 years. They have all become far more accomplished, thoughtful and skilful basketball players. A lot of credit for this improvement must go to Benedict Mayer, whose coaching abilities and enthusiasm for the game have been a great help to the team this season.

In order to progress the boys need to improve on the mental side of the game. Decision making under pressure is difficult, and will only become easier with on-court experience. Our play is still very frantic and erratic, and we need to keep hold of the ball longer and develop a more patient offense. Even so, we have scored plenty of points, mainly through Hussam Ahmed, who has averaged 15.7 points per game. He is a great talent and a fine leader on-court. Robbie Greenaway continues to improve. His shooting and dribbling are excellent, and I’m sure that if we can become a little more organised next year he might be able to find someone to pass to! Praise must also go to Dominic Mistry, who tries as hard as anyone I’ve ever seen to do the right things on court. Oliver Bentley has the capability to be an excellent player. He is combative and skilful and an excellent vice-Captain. With the addition of Joel Dodd to the squad, and the return from injury of Michael Murray, I am looking forward to next year already and our entry into the U16 league.
