Yr 5 trip to Fleetwood Nautical College

The Nautical College at Fleetwood was the destination for our Year 5 children and their teachers last week.

On arrival we were all made to feel very welcome with drinks. Jonathan and Michael were our hosts, and Jonathan started the trip off with a chat about what it would be like to attend the college, and a short DVD he showed, helped to catch the imagination of the children from the word go!

After this we were taken to the Fire ground. The children had great fun there, getting to use the fire hose and watching a dramatic demonstration of what could happen if a chip pan caught fire. We were also shown what happens to areosol cans if they catch fire. The noise from the explosion was surprisingly loud!  As well as fun being had, Mr Fryar (yes that was his real name) got across a very important message that fire can be extremely dangerous and should not be messed with. He also commented on how well behaved our children were.

Next up was a return to the college where the children were lucky enough to have a go in the boat simulator and a trip to Australia was on offer here. After this we had lunch, and as well as our normal school packed lunch the college served us up large bowls of chips. Both Mr Coyne and Mr Hodgkinson also enjoyed their hot lunch too!

In the afternoon we visited a place where we got to see real cadets training in the swimming pool. They were learning what to do if they were ever involved in a helicopter crash that had landed in the water. This was very interesting and great to watch.

Before our final destination we visited a lake where we saw several different boats including dinghies, kayaks and canoes. Here we also saw cadets sailing on the lake. Finally we ended up at Fleetwood Lifeboat Station. Here we met Steve and Dave. They showed us their offshore lifeboat - which cost over £2 million - and their inshore lifeboat. They also showed us the room where all the crew's equipment is kept and they explained to us how a "shout" is organised. They have 28 crew members in total!

After such an exciting day we said goodbye to Steve and Dave and travelled back to Arnold. The trip was jointly organised by Mrs Harper (Shannon's mum) and Mr Hodgkinson and all that attended (including Mr Coyne, Mrs Smyth and Mrs Gallagher) said that it was one of the best trips they had ever been on! We must also remember to mention that Mr Hodgkinson forgot one of the bags of packed lunches in the morning and Mr Storey kindly brought them up during his lunch hour! Well done Mr S!
