Girls gain glory!

Our junior and intermediate girls had a great day recently when they competed in the B final of the English Schools Track and Field Cup.

Up against nine other teams from the North West region, the Arnold athletes all performed well, especially on the track, with everyone improving their first round scores. There was a first and second place in the 300m for Lily Helme and Charlotte Evans, with Lily setting a new school record in a time of 44.8s and Charlotte coming a close second in a time of 45.5s. Molly Betmead was our other event winner with a time of 5min14s in the 1500m, whilst younger sister Amelia also won her heat with her time of 5min39s, putting her into third place.

Five new personal bests were set on the track. Emily Adams with a time of 13.4s in the intermediate 80m hurdles, Lucy Whalley (2min38s) and Ellie Greenhalgh (2min41s) in the 800m, Katy Astbury in the 200m (27.6s) and Sophie Akhtar in the 100m (13.1s). There were also good scores in the field but the only personal best came from Lily Helme who came second in the long jump with a best of 4.49m. Other pleasing performances came from Emily Adams in the discus (20.33m), Emily Dickson in the high jump (1.38m), Hannah Denison in the discus (18.38m) and from Daisy Bradley in the high jump (1.20m).

The top points scorer for the juniors was Molly Betmead with 37 points from her 1500m run and her javelin throw of 15.76m. Victoria Matthews was the second highest scorer with a total of 33 points from the long jump (4.05m) and the 100m (14.2s).

Joint top scorers in the intermediate competition with 40 points each were Sophie Akhtar and Lily Helme. Sophie gained 25 points from the 100m and 15 points from the shot putt, whilst Lily achieved 22 points from the 300m and 18 from the long jump. Charlotte Evans was one point behind the leaders after getting 21 points in the 300m and 18 points in the javelin.

These superb individual results helped both teams win their respective B finals but what was especially pleasing was that the girls improved their team results from the previous rounds. The intermediate team was the most successful; their point score of 351 was a massive 66 point increase on the first round, whilst the junior girl’s final score of 318 points improved their first round score by 32 points.
