Lancashire Schools' Cross Country Championships
Further to the successes of the Cross-Country runners at the Wyre and Fylde Championships last term, Arnold was again well represented in the Fylde team at the Lancashire Schools Championships held at Worden Park, Leyland on Saturday 4th February 2012.
Conditions for the runners could not have been worse, with frozen grounds and driving wind and rain that was freezing on impact. There were nonetheless some excellent performances from the Arnold athletes.
In his first championships, Year 7 Oscar Gavin was the third Fylde runner home finishing his 1900m course in 8 minutes 50 in 33rd place, and helping the team to finish fifth overall.
Ellis Whorlton-Jones finished very strongly in 10th position from a 65 strong field in the Junior Boys race, covering the 4325m course in 17.20. William Eccleston, running 5330m in the Inter Boys race finished in an excellent 13th position. Both Ellis and William, currently reserves, will now have to wait to see whether they are selected for the Lancashire team to compete in the National Championships in Taunton later in March.
However, Year 10 runner Molly Betmead has guaranteed her place in the Lancashire team, with a superb victory in the Inter Girls event. Neck and neck at the end of the first lap of the 3800m course, Molly ran with great tenacity and composure to win by a clear 12 second margin in a time of 16.20 to take her place at the top of the podium. The Fylde Inter Girls team also finished in first place, with Molly receiving the award on the team's behalf.
Well done to all those runners that took part in quite atrocious conditions, and good luck to those competing in Taunton in March.
Mr Jones
