Our U14 girls were in fine scoring form in Saturday's County Round of the Nationals at Preston.
After a slow start in the opening match against Kirkham the team began to string their passes together and pressurise the Kirkham defence. This led to a series of penalty corners, resulting in a well taken rebound by Charlotte Evans from a powerful strike by Hannah Hesketh. The team continued to attack and although they were awarded several more penalty corners they went into the half time break only 1 - 0 up. The second half saw them continue to dominate and they were soon rewarded with another goal from Charlotte Evans. The girls then took their focus off the game and let Kirkham take a consolation goal six minutes from time. This led to a nail biting finish to the game but all the girls worked tirelessly to defend and so win 2 - 1, in what was to be their hardest match of the tournament.
The second game against KEQMS saw the girls go on the attack straight from the whistle and Lydia Wright popped up to make it 1 - 0. The next two goals came from penalty corners, with Hannah converting a rocket strike from the top of the D and Holly Monteiro then taking a rebound. Lydia was in the right place on the post to slot in her second goal of the tournament, to make it 4 - 0. In the second half the girls continued to enjoy most of the possession and the final two goals were identical, with Charlotte weaving through the defence to slip the ball to Meghan Fearn on the left post to make the final score 6 - 0.
The girls were unstoppable in the final game against Rossall School, the match ending 8 - 0, with goals from Hannah Hesketh (3), Meghan Fearn (2), Emily Adams, Katy Astbury and Holly Monteiro.
This was an excellent squad performance, with every player making a valuable contribution to the tournament. The girls were delighted to be county champions and were a credit to themselves. They enjoyed excellent support from the parents and friends on the sidelines. It was a pleasure to be with such a talented group and such enthusiastic supporters. Well done girls!
