Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships

Scholarships are open to pupils who demonstrate excellence in their academic studies or in some other aspect of the curriculum such as art, sport or music. Scholarship awards are made only at entry to Year 7 or to the Lower Sixth Form.

Year 7
Academic Scholarships at this age are awarded on the basis of the results of the Entrance Examination. No separate application is required, nor are there any extra tests or interviews.

Other awards are made for Design, Music and Sport and a separate assessment is made. Candidates for these scholarships must meet the general criteria for admission to Arnold before a scholarship can be awarded. (For pupils transferring from Arnold Junior School this will be based on school reports. For external candidates it will be based on their performance in the entrance examinations.) All Rounder awards may also be made to candidates that have given a good account of themselves in two or more of the Scholarship competitions. In recent years in total about fifteen awards have been made annually.

Each Scholarship has a value of 10% of fees per annum. Each scholar also receives book tokens to the value of £10. The value of the award may be increased by the addition of a bursary if parents can demonstrate, through a means testing procedure, that the place would otherwise not be taken up because of financial hardship. Parents who would like to be considered for such an increase in the level of the award should indicate this on the Registration Form.

The award of a Scholarship is a significant achievement celebrated by placing the scholar's name on the Honours Boards and in other school literature. A non-returnable deposit of £100 is required upon acceptance of a Scholarship. This will be deducted from the first term's fee account.

Some Honorary Scholarships are awarded each year. These have no monetary value but the scholar receives a book token to the value of £10.

Lower Sixth Form (Year 12)
Scholarship examinations and interviews are held in November. Candidates for an academic scholarship offer 3 subjects for examination. Examinations are set on the GCSE courses and no extra preparation is required. Short listed candidates are also interviewed by the Principal or other senior member of staff.

Each Major Academic Scholarship carries a value of 10% of fees per annum, Minor Academic Scholarships have half the value. Each scholar also receives book tokens to the value of £50 or £25. The value of the awards may be increased by the award of a bursary if parents can demonstrate, through a means testing procedure, that the place would otherwise not be taken up because of financial hardship. Parents who would like to be considered for an increase in the level of the award should indicate this upon the 6th Form Registration form available from the Registrar.

Scholarships are also available in Art, Design, Drama, Music and Sport. In each case there is one major scholarship of 10% and one minor scholarship of 5% of fees per annum. Details of the requirements for these awards are published separately and are available from the Registrar. All candidates for Art, Design, Drama, Music and Sports scholarships must meet the general criteria for admission to the Sixth Form before a scholarship can be awarded.

The award of a Scholarship is a significant achievement celebrated by placing the scholar's name on the Honours Board and in other school literature. A non-returnable deposit of £100 is required upon acceptance of a 6th Form Scholarship. This will be deducted from the first term's fee account. Sixth Form awards may run alongside existing scholarships. Some Honorary Scholarships are awarded each year. These have no monetary value but the scholar receives a book token to the value of £25.

A very few Academic Scholarships may also be available upon receipt of the results of the GCSE examinations in the summer.

Bursaries
We can also offer limited financial support to pupils who satisfy the entry requirements but who would otherwise not be able to enter the school. We do this through the award of a bursary. At 11+ these bursaries will be offered in accordance with the order of merit as shown by the entrance examination and in accordance with financial need. Parents interested in applying for this form of financial support should indicate this on the Registration Form. Offers of assistance will vary according to individual circumstances but could be substantial. Further details of any of these awards are available from the Admissions Secretary, Miss Laura Rogers. She can be contacted by telephone on 01253 346391 or by email at lrogers@arnoldschool.com

Combined Trusts’ Scholarship Trust

The Combined Trust will be awarding scholarships to students planning to start an A Level course in September of any academic year and I have been invited to advise them of any Arnold pupils who wish to be considered in order that they may continue their education here in the 6th Form. The Trustees will be looking for students of conspicuous potential whose family and personal circumstances would make such a course unattainable without some financial assistance. Applications may only be made through me and I am permitted to nominate only one candidate. If you wish your son or daughter to be considered for such an application, I invite you to contact me in writing at your earliest convenience and by the end of the Autumn term at the very latest. Full particulars and application forms are available from:

Dr Richard Gliddon
36 Grange Court Road
Westbury on Trym
Bristol
BS9 4DR

In past years numerous enquiries and applications, often for meritorious students, have been received too late for consideration so please act now. In order that the restricted funds of CTST should help as many able pupils as possible, I am asked to advise parents who are applying for scholarships also to apply to other charities, which help at sixth form level.

Best wishes
