Religious Education

Head of Department: M A Harding

Religious Education is taught to pupils of all years, and along with our Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) programme, it is probably one of the most important ways of enabling the pupils to develop into well balanced adults. In the Lower School the Religious Education course covers three main areas; Learning about Living, Christian Beliefs and Worlds Religions.

The main aim of the PSHE course is to enable pupils to acquire the qualities, attitudes, values, knowledge and understanding, abilities and skills necessary for: Personal development, The acquisition of social competencies, Responsible participation, Independent thought and learning. Consequently, PSHE covers a variety of topics, which have direct relevance to the skills of every day living and to key life choices concerning values, lifestyles and relationships. The topic is introduced to pupils in Year 7 by Form Tutors and Matron. In other years PSHE is taught by specialists. The syllabus is designed to complement traditional academic subjects and gives pupils further opportunities to develop key skills. The aim is to encourage integrity and provide a safe forum for discussion rather than to give prescriptive answers.
