Physics

Head of Department: Miss R Matheson

Physics is the study of everyday processes that go on around us. It has a wide range of applications that go beyond the obvious and it also teaches useful analytical and problem solving skills. It involves many scientific techniques, such as the use of computers, and as a subject has a strong practical element.

Able students in Year 11 and the Upper Sixth are encouraged to enter the national Physics Challenge and British Physics Olympiad competitions. The Physics department operates as part of the Science Faculty, and is located in the heart of the school.

It has often been said that physicists are like Peter Pan - they never grow up and they keep their curiosity!

Many students attend the Institute of Physics meetings, details of which can be found here.
