PSHE helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives.

A. INTRODUCTION

This policy outlines the teaching; organisation and management of PSHE taught and learnt at Arnold Junior School. The implementation of this policy is the responsibility of all the teaching staff. At Arnold Junior School we believe that PSHE helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives.

Aims
PSHE provides opportunities for children to:
• Develop self confidence and self responsibility
• Develop a safe and healthy life style
• Develop the ability to form good relationships
• Have opportunity to consider issues which may affect their lives and lives of others
• Learn to respect the differences between people
• Prepare to play an active role as citizens

We intend to achieve these aims through:
• A school ethos that values the place and contribution of all individuals to the school community and promotes self respect and respect for others.
• Assemblies, (whole school, Key Stage, and class.)
• Timetabled PSHE lessons (alternate with aaemby)
• Circle time activities
• Teaching of PSHE through other subject areas
• Special activities and events ( e.g. involvement in charitable activities, visiting speakers etc.)
• Giving pupils opportunities to work in a variety of group setting.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

We are committed to providing a teaching environment conducive to learning. Each child is valued, respected and challenged regardless of ability, race, gender, religion, social background, culture or disability.

B. TEACHING PSHE

Teaching Time
There will be approximately 50 minutes of PSHE taught per week across the Key Stages. Additionally, as themes taught and discussed in PSHE are ongoing much work will be of an informal nature.

Foundation Stage
Please refer to the Foundation Stage Handbook

Class Organisation
Throughout the year all pupils will have regular PSHE sessions. Within these sessions there will be a good balance between whole–class work, group teaching and individual work.

Out-of-class work and homework
The regular PSHE lessons will provide opportunities for children to practise and consolidate their skills and knowledge, to develop and extend their techniques and strategies, and to prepare for their future learning. These may be extended through out-of-class activities or homework. These activities will be short and focused and will be referred to and valued in future lessons (See Homework Policy).

Links between PSHE and other subjects
PSHE contributes to many subjects within the primary curriculum and opportunities will be sought to cross reference a wide range of activities within such areas as literacy, R.E., P.E., and Science.

Resources
Iam, I Know, I can Tacade
This is the core text for PSHE 5-11 and is available to every year group. Units of work have been organised for each term in KS1 and KS2. Staff can supplement this material from other resources available in the Staff Work Room:
World of Alcohol Tacade
World of Drugs Tacade
World of Tobacco Tacade
Healthy Life 4-7
Healthy Life 8-11
Box files of other articles and material.

C. SCHOOL AND CLASS ORGANISATION

How we cater for pupils who are more able
Where possible more able pupils will be taught with their own class and stretched through differentiated group work and extra challenges. When working with the whole class, teachers will direct some questions towards the more able to maintain their involvement. Very occasionally special arrangements will be made for an exceptionally gifted pupil e.g. they may follow an individualised programme with more challenging problems to tackle.

How we cater for pupils with particular needs
The regular PSHE lesson is appropriate for almost all pupils. Teachers will involve all pupils through differentiation.

Pupils with special educational needs and individual education plans
Teachers will aim to include all pupils fully in their PSHE lessons. All children benefit from participating and watching and listening to other children demonstrating and explaining their ideas. However a pupil whose difficulties are severe or complex may need to be supported with an individualised programme in the main part of the lesson.

Information and Communication Technology
ICT will be used in various ways to support teaching and motivate children’s learning. ICT will involve the computer and other audio-visual aids.

Assessment
There will be ongoing informal assessment throughout each term. Parents will receive a statement of their child’s progress in their personal and social development in their end of year report.
