Swimming is a successful and thriving sport here at Arnold School. To someone from the outside this may seem strange as we do not have our own swimming pool to host our own galas or to train on a regular basis. However, what we do have in abundance is a fantastic team spirit, a core of talented club swimmers and a dedicated group of boys and girls who work extremely hard no matter who we are swimming against or where we are swimming at. The school team is made of mainly boys but we do have a growing band of very able girls swimmers who have performed superbly over the last few seasons. In fact, the Year 7 and Year 8 teams are made up equally of boys and girls.
We swim in a variety of different galas. There are galas against our traditional opponents from QEGS Blackburn, Bury GS, Kirkham GS and Hutton GS. Multi-team galas including the Bridges Baton Trophy in Blackburn with ourselves, QEGS, St Edwards, Hutton GS, Barnard Castle and Hulme GS; Hutton Quadrangular Gala against Hutton GS, Tarleton HS and Kirkham GS; and the QEGS Pentangular Trophy versus Lancaster, Ripley St Thomas, Hutton and QEGS.
We are also privileged to be invited to two major Relay Competitions. The John Parry Relays, held this year at Stonyhurst College, and the Sutton Trophy Manchester Relays held at Manchester GS. Both feature some of the best swimming schools in the north of England such as Lancaster RGS, Manchester, Nottingham and Merchant Taylors.
Finally, we enter the prestigious Bazuka National Relays. All age-groups enter this competition and in recent years we have been fortunate enough to have teams reach the finals with our Junior team in 2002 travelling to Crystal Palace and our Intermediate team in 2003 to Norwich.
In 2005/2006, numbers grew to make it possible to field teams in the U12, U13, U14, U15 & Senior age-groups with 40 boys and girls representing the school over the course of this season.
In recent years, the school has also entered students in the National Biathlon Championships and in local triathlons with some impressive results being achieved.
