OA v School Golf Match

Once again Blackpool North Shore were our hosts for our annual match.
Unusually for that venue the weather was very good with only a moderate breeze. The OA team was a mixture of ‘youth’ and experience, although it wasn’t often clear which was which.
The School team had three ‘first-timers’ who all performed well. They also had two ladies in the team, which was quite fitting as it is 30 years since girls first adorned the school.

The first game was between Brian Livesy and Kerry Lee for the OAs v Ben Hodson and Ben New for School. It’s fair to say that this was a one sided match from the start, with the OA pair running away to win 7&6.
One of the OA regulars of this fixture, Andy Davies was partnered by Andy Parker (son of Fez) to play Alistair Cave and James Hodson. The School pair knitted well with Alistair playing some fine approach shots. They won 3&2.

In their middle pairing the OAs fielded a ‘youthful’ pair of Tim Wyles and Phil Jones to play the two youngest, and smallest, School players, Luke Olsson and Steven Hirst. The littlies won 2&1, and were even not averse to sledging their more senior opponents! There is something hard about losing to such diminutive opposition.

School fielded sixth former Emma Seddan in their forth pair playing along side James ‘No Shoes’ Craigen. They were always going to have a tough match against Mike Hancock and Roger Hesketh, and so it proved. Despite being 4 up at one point the OAs clawed there way back and when James lipped out on the 17th the pressure was on. True to form the OA pair hung on for a draw.

The OA pair of Simon Walker and Andrew Hayhurst got of to a flying start against the School staff pair of Paul Oliver and Mrs Jackie Malin going 3 up after 4 and 4 up at the turn. However the School pair dragged them back with Jackie Malin never missing a fairway. It was all to play for at the 18th where for once the ladies tee was behind the men’s. Unfazed by this Jackie out drove one of her opponents! But as they say, drive for show etc….. Andrew used his local knowledge to play the hole perfectly to win 1 up.

So the final result was match drawn. A very enjoyable meal followed, with OA President Fiona Kinder presenting the trophy to the OA team who retain it after their last win in 2004.
