At Arnold, all pupils are encouraged to take an active role in music and the department offers a broad range of opportunities for pupils of every age and ability. Each year a number of music scholarships are awarded.

Working within a positive and vibrant environment, our aim is for music to be both fun and productive, ensuring that pupils perform and progress to the best of their abilities.

The music department has brand new facilities which include a recital room, music technology suite and several practice rooms. There are numerous musical activities on offer for pupils of all ages and abilities and each term, both formal and informal concerts are organised including the popular Evening of Swing and the performance of a major choral work with orchestra in the Spring Term. In 2007 the combined choirs and choral society performed Carl Orff's Carmina Burana and an U6 pupil premiered a trombone concerto he had composed.

Many of our ensembles also perform at engagements outside school and our Girls' Choir toured to Venice at Christmas 2007. Professional musicians have also visited Arnold to give recitals and workshops including pianist Andrew Wilde, singer Charlotte Kinder and Status Quo's drummer Jeff Rich.

Concert reviews

Two full time members of music staff and a dedicated team of peripatetic musicians are fully committed to the enjoyment of music and encouraging the highest standards from individual pupils. A number of Music Scholarships are offered each year for entry into year 7 and the 6th form and instrumental tuition is available in school on orchestral instruments, singing, piano and guitar.

Music is taught to all pupils as part of the curriculum in the Lower School and an increasing number are taking the subject to GCSE and A-level. Several pupils have gone on to study music at university and music colleges. This year two pupils have gained places to study at the Royal Northern College of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire.
