I was born in Lancashire and educated at Farnworth Grammar School before studying English and Education as my main subjects at teacher training college in Durham. I continued my education part-time with the Open University, studying for a degree in English Literature and Education, whilst teaching in state primary schools in Birmingham and then Yorkshire. After five years I moved to Dorset where, after having three daughters, I returned to teaching. I taught in two state primary schools there and then took up the position of Form Mistress at Port Regis, a boarding Prep School.
I first became interested in special education at this stage and joined the Dorset Dyslexia Association, attending and sometimes organising meetings and conferences. After nine years at Port Regis, I returned to my Northern roots. I started to work for Lancashire County Council for the Reading and Language Service as a peripatetic teacher working in Primary and Secondary schools, helping children with learning difficulties. I received excellent in-service training in Special Needs and completed a diploma in Special Needs with the University of Central Lancashire in conjunction with LCC. I followed this up with an Advanced Diploma in Special Needs with the Open University.
The Reading and Language Service was reorganised into a Primary school service only and I was offered a post at Longridge High School teaching English, RE, Maths and Special Needs. When my predecessor at Arnold relocated to the south of England I was offered the post of Head of Learning Support. However, after six years I became part-time. I have continued my education and interest in Special Education and recently completed a Masters degree in Special Education with the University of Wales, Bangor and have been appointed a Member of the British Dyslexia Association.
