Excerpts from a Headmaster's In-Tray
Back to school with a spring in my step
I am not one to get particularly excited about the weather, but the warm sunshine over the Easter and May Day holidays has convinced even a grumpy Arsenal fan like me that there is much to smile about. Watching the 1st XI take on the MCC in a thrilling encounter at school last week was another happy hint that summer may just be around the corner. Bright mornings and long evenings have a noticeable impact on the entire school community and I certainly headed into school this morning with a renewed sense of purpose and vigour. After our slightly false start to the new term last week, I trust that everyone is now equally well-rested and excited about the possibilities and challenges that lie ahead of us this term. This really is the 'business-end' of the school year and, despite the sunshine, there is much to be done.
The Junior School threw open their doors and welcomed 150 grandparents into school at the end of last term. They were treated to a fine performance of 'Robin Hood and Friends' before joining their grandchildren in lessons. I spent a most agreeable afternoon speaking to our visitors about their varied school experiences although there appeared to be a happy consensus that things have changed "for the better". Many grandparents could not believe the incredible technology that Arnold pupils have at their fingertips.
Just before we broke up, I was lucky enough to watch a stunning performance of 'London Calling' by our Lower Sixth Dramatists. It was a raw and unforgettable piece of theatre and visibly affected many audience members. I was not at all surprised to learn that the pupils involved were all rewarded with the very highest marks from the External Examiner. This Wednesday, it will be the turn of our Upper Sixth students to put on their own examination piece, 'Sweetest Downfall'. This promises to be another highly accomplished production in the Gledhill Drama Studio at school. There will be two performances at 5.00pm and 7.00pm; please do come along.
During the break, my family and I spent a sunny afternoon visiting our CCF boys and girls, who were undertaking some adventurous training in the Lake District whilst using Almond Lodge as their base. We joined them in the middle of an action-packed few days and enjoyed our brief time watching the climbers in action and seeing the canoeists move deftly across Derwentwater. I was one of many following the Caribbean exploits of our cricketers over Easter. Mr Evans' real-time blog and video highlights certainly had me wishing that I was there. I now look forward to seeing some highly effective cricket from the boys this season, born from their match experiences on tour.
Tonight my wife and I will join 170 other music fans for a relaxed 'Musical Evening of Swing' in the Memorial Hall. The event sold out in less than a week, which just goes to show what a draw Arnold's musical events have become. Do get your tickets early for the Summer Concert.
I finish by warmly inviting you to join me at this year's Headmaster's Debate, which will take place on Thursday 12th May. Two teams will lock horns to discuss the motion 'This House would support the UK leaving the European Union'. It is now nearly a decade since the Euro became a reality and the recent economic difficulties in Europe have once again reignited the debate around the UK's position in Europe. Be assured that contributions from the audience are encouraged but not required! I do hope that as many parents, pupils and staff as possible will come along and enjoy some intellectual jousting.
Best wishes
