I read process design engineering at the Royal School of Mines, and worked in a platinum mine in South Africa and a copper mine in Canada.
I started my teaching career in Dulwich teaching chemistry and physics. Later I specialised in chemistry, with geology as a minority subject. With the introduction of National Curriculum Technology my engineering knowledge was in increasing demand and eventually I became Head of Science and Technology. During this time I also became examinations officer and created the school timetable.
I have taught four different subjects to A level standard in academic independent day schools - an indication of the wide range of skills and knowledge needed by engineers. During my teaching career I have directed several school plays and musicals, designed and built scenery and stage managed over a hundred more such productions. I have published scientific papers on geology, palaeontology and philately.
At Arnold I have steadily assumed more whole school responsibilities especially for the School's management information system, creating the timetable, and the options process.
