We were blessed with fine weather for Sports Day this year and once again the competition was close.
The overall result went to Howarths who managed to prise it away from Penningtons who have dominated the event in recent years.

In a thrilling battle of brains, Liston's took on School in the final of the Inter-House Quiz for the Sixth Form. As ever Mr Hayden was in the chair and the Lecture Theatre was hushed as the titanic struggle of intellects began.
It was nip and tuck much of the way through until Liston's began to pull ahead in the middle. It seemed all over for School until two good bonus rounds brought them to within forty points (four correct questions) of Liston's points.
The score stood at 280 for Liston's, and 240 for School when Mr Hayden read the final starter question. Imagine the excitement when School proved to have the fastest fingers on the starter - 280 played 250.
Team Liston's could only watch in dismay as the next two questions were correctly answered - Liston's 280/School 270. Could School snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with the final correct bonus with the extra ten points for getting all the bonuses correct? The tension was palpable as the final question came. School could not supply the answer, but Liston's were there at the death to snatch that vital ten points. It all came down to one question: Liston's 290/ School 270.
Congratulations are due not only to Liston's but to both teams for an excellent and entertaining trivia treat.

The eagerly awaited Sixth Form Inter-House Quiz took place in the last sectional assembly of the half term. School House had won at both Junior and Middle School level, but this time they had been knocked out in the semis. A packed Lecture Theatre saw Pennington's (top seeds) take on the number two seeds, Howarth's.
With Mr Hayden taking on the role of Jeremy Paxman (or Bamber Gascoigne for older readers), the two teams were bombarded with starter and bonus questions in the style of 'University Challenge.'
Pennington's led comfortably early on, but their confidence evaporated in the face of a barrage of fast-finger responses from an on form Brett Smalley - the secret weapon in the Howarth's armoury. Brett's monumental treasure chest of trivia won the day, as Howarth's defied the odds to take an unlikely victory by 300 points to 190.
Pennington's retired to their tents, older but wiser. To render Howarth's victory more sweet, they had managed it without the services of Joseph Craig. Thanks are due to Mark Blackburn for stepping into the breech.
'Team Howarth': Brett Smalley, James Cain, Joseph Craig (sub. Mark Blackburn), Robert Mackay.
The Autumn Term has seen a widening of the scope of the Inter-House quiz. Separate competitions were held for all pupils in the Lower School and Middle School; from these, House teams of four were selected in both age ranges. This led to semi-finals held during Activity Time followed by the finals (based on the University Challenge format) which took place in the appropriate year group assemblies.
Lower School - School defeated Penningtons in the final.
Middle School - School defeated Howarths in the final.
A completely new activity has been ‘Hardspell’ for Years 7 and 8, following a similar pattern to the Quiz; in the final, Listons beat Howarths.
