Key Stage 2

At Key Stage 2 the children continue to follow the requirements of the National Curriculum but begin to experience a greater breadth of opportunity that goes beyond its confines. The added value of an Arnold education ensures that all of our children foster a love of learning and develop a myriad of new skills that will prepare them for the challenge of the Senior School and beyond. We aim to bring out the very best in every child both in and out of the classroom.

In addition to delivering the four core curriculum areas of maths, English, ICT and science our children will enjoy timetabled lessons in the following subjects: geography, history, modern foreign languages (Spanish, German and French), creative thinking skills, PE and games, music, art, drama, PSHE, design technology (including cookery) and RE. Some subjects are specialist taught and art, DT, ICT and science are all taught in specially designed and resourced rooms. This means that our children not only get the very best but learn a lot more as a result. All classrooms are kitted out with the very latest Promethean whiteboards and teachers and teaching assistants receive bespoke training on how to use them on an annual basis.

Progress is carefully monitored using GL (Granada Learning) Assessments in maths and English, whic are taken every September, from Reception year onwards. This not only allows us to benchmark and target set but also provides us with that all important value added data. Progress and effort are regularly reported back to our parents via termly effort cards, twice yearly parents’ evenings and a full end of year report. Form Teachers are also available at any point in the school year to discuss individual progress. Children are also actively involved in assessing and evaluating their own progress and are encouraged to do so, via our assessment for learning programme, on a daily basis.

Arnold Junior School recognises those children who may need extra support and employ successful pupil support and gifted and talented programmes.

Our classroom based curriculum is supported and enhanced by trips and visitors. The children benefit greatly from trips to places as varied as The Grand Theatre, Curedon Valley and Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. Annual trips to The Glaramara centre in the Lake District to take part in outdoor activity residentials and the ski trip to France every other year, ensure that our children learn many skills that are not possible in the classroom. Visitors to the school include authors, poets, musicians, scientists, drama companies and even a Viking.

Extra curricular opportunity is also extensive with the following clubs currently on offer: football, netball, hockey, rugby, cricket, rounders, athletics, gymnastics, yoga, fencing, judo, horse riding, chess, computers, art, sewing, Mad Science and gardening.
