Win at Westholme not the best
On Monday our U11 hockey team travelled to Chester for the IAPS Junior Hockey Tournament. This was the first time we have entered the event and it proved to be a worthwhile experience.
The tournament was organised into two groups, with each game only lasting seven minutes. Our girls played some good hockey to give them four victories out of four in the group stage. They started off with a 1-0 win against Austin Friars. This was followed by a 1-0 victory against Queen's Chester, a 2-0 win over Stockport B and a 3-0 triumph against Merton House School. The goal scorers were Sophie Greener (3), Victoria Matthews (3) and Milli Kenworthy (1).
As group winners we were drawn against the runners up from the other group - Liverpool College. After a sloppy start we found ourselves 1-0 down early on. However, this proved to be the only attack on our goal in the match. Good attacking play led to a series of short corners and eventually the pressure told with Grace Morris scoring a deserved equaliser. This left the final score 1-1 and after another five minutes extra time we were unable to find a winner. The rules of the competition meant that a coin had to be tossed to decide who would progress to the final against Lyndon Prep. Victoria called correctly and we were through.
The final itself was a hugely entertaining game with Victoria scoring a well taken goal first. Lyndon then hit back with two quick goals and with only seconds remaining Victoria managed to find an equaliser. This time the golden goal came in to play and unfortunately Lyndon found the net first to give them a 3-2 victory. However, this was a valuable experience of tournament hockey for the girls and they thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Chester. Well played girls!
