IAPS 7-a-side soccer tournament
The Manchester City FC Academy has played host to many talented young footballers over the years and this afternoon was no exception. The IAPS Tournament attracted schools from all over the North West and Wales and was played on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Arnold got off to a flying start in the groups stages with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Hunter Hall (Penrith). In the second game they faced much sterner opposition in Stockport Grammar ‘A’ team, but performed well and took a deserved 1-0 lead. However, two lapses in concentration allowed Stockport to equalise and then take the lead. The third game was against The Rileys (Alderly Edge) and again Arnold took the lead only to let in the opposition to earn a 1-1 draw. In the final group game Arnold took on Sunnymede (Merseyside) and got back to winning ways with a convincing 2-1 victory.
Seven points from the group games didn’t look like it would be enough to send Arnold through to the knock out stages, but with other results going our way, we finished second on goal difference, which set up a semi final tie against Stockport Grammar ‘B’. In a close game, Stockport had a goal disallowed and Arnold capitalised with a long range free kick from Callan Barrow finding the back of the net.
The final saw Arnold come up against Stockport ‘A’ again and despite a close first half, Stockport became more dominant as the match progressed and snatched a deserved winner to take the game, and the trophy, 1-0.
The boys played tremendously well throughout and were pleased with their silver medals, having been beaten by a strong Stockport side. A great team effort and a special mention for goalkeeper William Eccleston who performed magnificently throughout.
