Win at Westholme not the best
It is always difficult to get good results against schools with a much larger intake of pupils. This was the case on Saturday, when our hockey teams were in action against Altrincham Girls GS, a school that has nearly 170 girls in each year group. Undaunted, and possibly unaware of the imbalance in numbers, Arnold played well in some close games to come away with two wins and two draws.
In an end-to-end 1st XI game, Georgia Perkins gave Arnold a first half lead after a fine cross from Harley Greene on the right. Stephanie Lees passed well and made some good runs on the left, but scoring goals was never going to be easy against Altrincham's U16 England keeper. In the second half, Cara Smith came close, forcing the keeper to make an outstanding save, after beating two players and striking at goal from the edge of the circle. Unfortunately a lapse in defence gave Altrincham the equaliser, ten minutes from time.
The 2nd XI game also ended 1-1 but this time it was Altrincham who took the early lead. Arnold dominated much of the second half, especially in midfield and good team play on the right between Heather Roberts and Faye Shearer led to the Arnold goal. The scorer was Emily Pomeroy who slipped a first time shot past the keeper after a cross from Faye Shearer.
After a shaky first five minutes, the U15 team settled and played some good team hockey. Lara Cherry was outstanding on the right wing and it was her speed and skill that led to the only goal of the match, when she got around the back of the defence to force a penalty corner. Rachel Fackey's corner strike was saved but not cleared, which gave Charlotte Wells the opportunity to slip the ball towards goal for Charlotte Greenwood to score. The second half was even with both teams having chances, but Arnold played well in defence to keep their lead and won the game 1-0.
The U13 team had the best result of the day with a convincing 4-0 win. All four goals were scored by on form striker Emily Adams, three of them from penalty corner strikes. There were also good displays from Jessica Omassoli and Lucy Dale who worked hard and passed well.
