Hockey Nationals

The U14 squad, with 13 Year 9 and 2 Year 8 pupils travelled to Timperley Hockey Club on Friday to compete in the Regional Round of the Nationals.

They had to face two unknown teams in their section, Tapton School from Sheffield, South Yorkshire and Wilmslow High from Cheshire.

In their first match against Tapton the girls found their form early on and went 1 - 0 up from a Hannah Hesketh corner strike. They managed to hang on to their lead until half time and started to play some excellent hockey in the second half to score two more goals. Holly Monteiro scoring after a solo run, weaving in and out through the opposition to score with a superb reverse sweep shot. Charlotte Evans made it three to complete a great start to the tournament. T

he girls had a ten minute rest before they were back on to face Wilmslow High. This team was more physical and although the girls were breaking well on the attack there was no way through, the Wilmslow goalkeeper making some fine saves.  It wasn't until just after the restart that the team took the lead, Meghan Fearn on the left slipping the ball in after some fine attacking play by Holly and Jessica Omassoli. The midfield continued to feed the ball through to the forwards with Charlotte Evans distributing the ball well from the centre. It was Charlotte who got the second score after a series of passes in the circle found her with a clear sweep on goal.

As winners of their group they had to face Merchant Taylors' of Merseyside in the semi final. The girls dominated the first half of this game and had several scoring chances but couldn't convert them. After a series of penalty corners they got the break they deserved with a fine strike from the top of the D from Hannah Hesketh. They continued to press forward and were rewarded with their second goal from a run down the right from Holly who then slipped the ball across goal for Jessica to sweep it in. The second half saw the girls get a little bit complacent and Merchants got one back from a break away. This sparked the girls into action and Holly made it 3 - 1 with another individual goal.

The girls now go forward with Cheadle Hulme, the winners of the other semi final, to compete in the North Final at Belle Vue Manchester on December 2nd.
