A Tale of Two Cities
Old Arnoldian performs in London
A large group of Year 9 pupils and four staff had an early start for their journey North to visit Hadrian's Wall.
After a stop at Tebay en route, the group visited Banks' turret, Birdoswald, Poltross Burn Milecastle and Willowford to examine the construction of the wall itself, before heading for the Roman Army museum at Carvoran, in which the pupils used the exhibits to complete workbooks and watched a useful overview film of the wall, its setting and its uses.
The road took the group down to Housesteads fort for a well deserved al fresco lunch, before climbing up the fort and once more completing work, this time on the buildings and location of the fort. The last leg of the day saw the group arrive at Vindolanda, in time to see real archaeologists digging on site, allowing us to gain some idea of their painstaking efforts.
The group then enjoyed raiding the reconstructed turrets and passing through the civilian settlement before entering the fort itself, within which a full size granary has been uncovered in the last month. The picturesque path led us past further reconstructions before visiting the museum with its unique letters from Roman women and soldiers as well as the large quantity of preserved organic materials. The trip was an excellent conclusion to our work on the Roman invasion of Britain.
