After a hectic week of matches two of our golf teams played in the finals day of the Lancashire Schools Golf Association Knock Out, along with Merchant Taylors' and Lowton.
On a hot day at Bolton Golf Club our B team of Stephen Hurst, Nick Sharples and Harry McNulty was up against the strong favourites, Merchant Taylors'. The team fought well against the physical strength of their Sixth Form players who had good length off the tee and a very consistent short game, which their handicaps of 2,4 and 6 reflected. However, our first two games were halved on the 18th but unfortunately Harry lost 2 down.
Meanwhile the C team of Luke Olsson, Sam Crowther and Alex Olsson were taking on Lowton School from Oldham. The boys looked to be in control from the start and some good approach play from Luke and Sam saw them secure a place in the 1st and 2nd play-off, which made Alex's loss more bearable.
After a short lunch break, the B team took Lowton on in what proved to be a very close match. Stephen had a putt for a win on the 18th, but had to settle for the half. Nick Sharples, who had been 4 down at one stage, had three birdies on the back nine to secure a win at the last hole. Harry had been close all the way round in his game and was 1 up at the 17th, which he then went on to win and help the team to claim 3rd place.
The hot conditions were beginning to take their toll in the afternoon, and all three of our C Team players struggled to find their form of the morning. By the time the players were on the back nine the game was swinging in Merchants' favour, and eventually they secured a deserved 3-0 win. However, the good news is that as runners-up in the competition, out of the 64 teams that competed, we have been invited to represent Lancashire, along with Merchant Taylors', in the National English Schools Team Championship at Penn GC, Wolverhampton, on July 10th. A well deserved reward for this young team of talented golfers.
The boys will be playing at the Arnold Charity Golf Day, at Fairhaven, for the school championship on July 11th, the day after the finals . If you would like to be part of the day and enter a team, please contact me at school, or email proliver@arnoldschool.com.
