Win at Westholme not the best
With King Edward and Queen Mary School being unable to honour the first round match of the HMC Schools' Foursomes, the fixture against QEGS Blackburn was expected to be a difficult one, especially in this format, and because it is a scratch competition. We need not have worried.
Playing at Fairhaven GC meant that the team was playing in familiar surroundings, and in recent years Blackburn have been a very strong side. Howver, a change of personnel meant that they had a far younger side this year.
The teams were evenly matched from a handicap point of view so a close contest was expected. It was probably the experience of the Arnold team that won out in the end. Luke Olsson and Sam Crowther, our 1st pair won 6&4 with Sam producing a putting display that completely demoralised the opposition. Second pair, Stephen Hurst and Nicholas Sharples, won 7&6. In form Nicholas showing what was to come on the 1st tee when he smashed a drive down the fairway with pinpoint accuracy.
Alex Olsson and Harrison Kenworthy halved their match, although they were convinced that if all 18 holes had been open as opposed to 17, they would have won!
The players now await the outcome of the game between Birkenhead and The Grange School to see who they will play in the Northern semi-final.
