Geography & Geology

Head of Department: K H Lee

Geography and geology are both taught at Arnold in a well established department. The days of a good geographer having a sharpened set of coloured pencils have long gone. This subject takes advantage of the latest in technological developments, which help deliver highly dynamic and topical subject areas.

In all classrooms, the latest satellite images can be viewed, or news reports studied, as with the Tsunami, which was the focus of our work with year groups 8, GCSE and A level.

As much as possible we try to make the pupils experience the subjects hands-on, through fieldwork. (View our latest trip). Each child visits Almond Lodge for a residential course in year 7. A level students have recently visited the Netherlands, French Alps and Arran.

The department maintains a close link with Africa through its Village Aid programme. It sends pupils to Buigiri in Tanzania and sponsors a range of projects in the village, which helps them to better understand the problems of the Third World countries.

With the use of technology our pupils can see the wonder of Geography as it happens, inspiring them to appreciate the planet and the way it works.
