French is taught throughout the school. Junior classes have 2 x 30 minute lessons per week, and pupils in Years 1 and 2 have one weekly lesson of 20 minutes. This is supplemented by a weekly French club for Juniors, an annual whole school French Day, and a residential visit to France for the upper junior pupils.

We follow broadly the aims and content of the National Curriculum: KS2 Modern Foreign Languages.
Attainment targets
The four attainment targets for modern foreign languages are:
• Attainment target 1: Listening and responding
• Attainment target 2: Speaking
• Attainment target 3: Reading and responding
• Attainment target 4: Writing.

Lessons are conducted as far as possible in the target language, providing a context for meaningful communication.

The contribution of modern foreign languages to the K S 1 & 2 curriculum
The learning of a foreign language in primary school provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for all pupils. Pupils develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between the foreign language and English. Learning another language raises awareness of the multi-lingual and multi-cultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils' learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. The learning of a foreign language provides a medium for cross-curricular links, and for the reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects including ICT.

Learning objectives.
1. In the early stages of language learning pupils will learn:
• how to use and respond to the foreign language
• how to listen carefully in order to discriminate sounds, identify meaning and develop auditory awareness
• correct pronunciation and intonation
• how to ask and answer questions
• techniques for memorising words, phrases and short extracts
• how to use context and clues to interpret meaning
• how to make use of their knowledge of English or another language in learning the foreign language

2. Pupils are taught about other countries and cultures by:
• working with authentic materials including ICT-based sources
• considering other cultures and comparing them with their own
• considering the experiences of other people

3. In order to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding further, pupils will learn:
• the interrelationship of sounds and writing
• basic aspects of grammar and how to apply them
• how to initiate conversations
• how to use dictionaries and other reference materials
• how to communicate with each other in the foreign language in pairs and groups and with their teacher
• how to use their knowledge of the language creatively and imaginatively
• how to use the foreign language for real purposes
• how to use ICT as a tool for learning and reinforcement
