An Evening of Spoken English

It was not exactly the balmy summer’s evening that we had hoped for, yet the rain and the wind did have their merits, being fitting conditions to mark the arrival of three very haunting characters.

7M’s extract from ‘Macbeth’ was opened by three ghoulish beings that crept from the back of the darkened hall to take position on stage. Their interpretation of the Shakespearean tragedy was further complemented by Bowen Feng, Ben Manley and Helen Craig’s monologues in character, revealing the true Macbeth, his motivations, temptations and frailties.

On a more light hearted note, humorous poetry was recited by a range of Year 7 and Year 8 pupils; ‘Please Mrs Butler’, performed by Emily Tongue and Lucy Salmon, delighted both audience and staff, whilst Roxanne Reynold’s ‘Jabbermockery’ provided an interesting interpretation of school life. Choral speaking also proved a great success, an atmospheric adaptation of Homer’s classic ‘The Odyssey’ opening the evening’s entertainment.

Indeed, our very own Mr Smyth trod the boards, narrating a scene from ‘Buddy’, performed with aplomb by Matthew McCherry and Philip Connolley.

The finale of the evening took the form of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’, lead by a grumpy Gandolf with an almost fatal lack of foresight. 8N’s re-writing of the popular classic and blockbuster film proved a hit with the audience, whose laughter was a sure sign of its success.

Congratulations must go to all those who contributed to the evening’s entertainment, not forgetting those behind the scenes whose support was invaluable.
