English Club every Thursday in activity period in E6.
Our first meeting was a great success and we enjoyed an 'Alice in Wonderland' style Mad Hatter's tea party! It was fun and involved lots of cakes!! We discussed what activities we would like to focus on in the year ahead.
Typical activities will include reviewing books and films, entering national and local competitions, poetry writing and reading, role-play, drama activities and themed events.
English Club is NOT just for people who have a flair for English - but for anyone with an open mind and the will to try.
Can you solve the mystery of 'The Kitty Caper'?
National poetry day was celebrated in true Arthurian style at Arnold School this term.
The subject of Tennyson's mythical poem, The Lady of Shalott, was brought to life in English lessons and at English Club - as one teacher dressed up as the medieval damsel for the day.
Claire Fearn, came up with the novel idea. Mrs Fearn explained: "I thought it would bring an extra dimension to the poem and bring the text to life for the children in a way that is not possible through reading alone. I had the ideal opportunity for such a venture with National Poetry Day. I believe it is important that we celebrate our great literary heritage and help children access such wonderful poems. I have been amazed by the responses from the pupils I teach. They have all entered into the spirit of the occasion and given their full attention and imagination to the drama-based activities today.
Pupils were excited and inspired by this approach. Rachel Fackey from Year 7 said: "It made the lesson much more exciting and gave us a good idea of what the Lady of Shalott would have looked like. Vice Principal, Jim Keefe, commented: "I am delighted to see that the English Department's long standing commitment to making poetry accessible and interesting for pupils is being continued in this dynamic fashion."
