The Physical Education Faculty offers examinations in PE at both GCSE level and at ‘A’ level.
These courses have proven to be both popular and successful and complement the efforts of the teachers and students. The introduction of the AS levels will we hope provide a greater number and a higher caliber student taking the examinations.
Please refer to the Faculty’s Policy on Inclusion.
In addition all 3rd Year pupils sit an examination in PE in both January and June. Although no specific revision can be done, the examination tests the pupils’ knowledge on issues such as:
• Health and Fitness
• Safety
• Rules and Regulations
• Contemporary issues
The questions are short answer and multiple-choice, enabling pupils the opportunity to expand their responses as appropriate. The same paper is set for boys and girls, with the freedom to use examples from their own practical experience.
The Physical Education Faculty possesses its own classroom/laboratory which is used almost extensively for all examinable PE theory lessons. This has enabled the PE faculty to develop existing areas of teaching and the opportunity to learn in an environment conducive to PE and sport. Materials and resources are also readily at hand within any given lesson.
Pupils are actively encouraged to read around many topic areas at GCSE and A level. The Faculty is currently expanding its PE Library which not only contains many of the most contemporary books available but covers the majority areas of PE. Allied to this teaching resource and learning aid the PE faculty subscribes to journals (Peak Performance & Supercoach) as well as broad sheet newspapers (Daily Telegraph, The Times & Guardian via the School Library).
The PE faculty has a video cassette recorder (VCR) and overhead Projector (OHP) which affords the teacher another potential avenue for delivery of the curriculum/syllabus with an expanding collection of relevant videos and acetates. Allied to these audio and visual aids it is hoped that this room will have computer facilities for use by the students. IT software is increasingly used at GCSE and A Level.
