On graduating from Liverpool University, I joined the Truck and Bus Division of Leyland Motors, working in a variety of research and development posts over the following seven years and gaining Chartered Engineer status. This was followed by two years with the Ministry of Defence designing missile safety and arming systems and seven years with a major supplier of coal mine roof supports, first as a senior designer and then as head of the Computer Aided Design Department. The remainder of my non-teaching career was completed with two American computer manufacturers as a software consultant specialising in Computer Aided Design. In 1993 I moved into Further education as a Lecturer and in 1997 I joined Arnold School.
I served in the Royal Naval Reserve for many years, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander and senior marine engineer officer of Mersey Division RNR.
