Let\'s talk about it!
Arnold runs two societies: one for 6th Formers and another for members of the Middle School. Debates are normally ‘short preparation’, everyone in the room contributing, and then two from each side speaking. A gavel and a loud voice help the chairman to keep order when things get too rowdy. Topics are many and various: ranging from the serious (euthanasia, Iraq War, capital punishment), to the frivolous (banning beards) to the contentious (men are better than women, zoos should be closed). In addition, we regularly enter and host debating competitions such as the English Speaking Union and Cambridge Union. Those who enjoy speaking but prefer not to have to do too much thinking on their feet can enter the various public speaking competitions which provide a more structured and formal forum for displaying oral skills. We regularly enter teams for the Rotary Club, Business and Professional Women and ESU public speaking competitions where Arnold pupils have achieved a good level of success in regional rounds.
