Arnold School Cricket

Introduction

Cricket is a flourishing and successful sport at Arnold School. It is the main summer sport played by the boys and there is an ever growing squad of girls who play fixtures each season.

The present day sees cricket in a very healthy state with all of our teams, both A and B teams, able to compete on equal terms with the best schools in the region. Standards are improving year on year and the number of boys playing the game and gaining enjoyment is growing. Due to the popularity a third senior team has been created for 2007. The 3rd XI will play Twenty20 style matches against local opposition.

Our facilities are the envy of many of our local schools, as we are fortunate enough to have both fantastic indoor and outdoor facilities at our disposal. Due to the standard of our facilities, we are able to field 11 boys teams giving over 140 boys the opportunity to play regular fixtures against local and regional opposition. Block fixtures are played on a Saturday during the summer term, and also throughout the week during Games and after school. In addition to these fixtures our U12, U13, U14, U15 and 1st XI sides play in the county cup.

However, cricket is not just a summer sport. Throughout the winter and spring terms, our indoor nets are heavily used by all of the school cricketers, from U12 to 1st XI to girls. These months are used extensively to prepare the players for what is often a hectic, but successful, summer term of cricket.

As well as being coached by more than 10 dedicated cricket staff, our boys are given expert guidance by the Lancashire Cricket Development Officer, Bobby Denning, who coaches at the school throughout the Autumn/Winter and Spring Nets.

Easter 2005 also saw some of our senior cricketers and staff make the journey of a lifetime to the Caribbean on Arnold School's first ever overseas cricket tour to the twin islands of Trinidad & Tobago. This was a unique, exhilarating and invaluable experience for 18 of our senior cricketers which led to one of the finest 1st XI seasons for over 15 years. A junior overseas tour, comprising 28 boys and 5 staff, travelled to the islands of Grenada, Carriacou and Union Island in April, 2008.
