Sprint, jump, throw, run!

A great day of fine weather greeted competitors as they arrived for the  Fylde Coast Combined Events Competition for Year 8 and Year 9 girls, hosted by Arnold. This demanding competition involves all athletes competing in four events during the day - a sprint, a throw and a jump and the event finishes with an 800m run.

Ten schools from Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre entered the competition and nearly two hundred athletes took part on the day. There were team, individual and event competitions and honours were evenly shared between a number of schools.

In the Year 9 age group, St. Aidan's won the team competition and the runners up were King Edward and Queen Mary School. The Year 9 Individual Competition was won by Beth Towers from St. Bede's High School, Lytham who dominated the Year 9 competition setting a new championship record of 5.04m in the long jump and also winning the hurdles and shot putt. Lydia Critchley from St.Aidan's School, Preesall won the 800m and was runner up in the individual competition. In a close runners up battle she finished two points ahead of Aleisha Johnston from Highfield School Blackpool, who came third.

In the Year 8 competition, Arnold romped to victory finishing 109 points ahead of their nearest rivals St.Aidan's.  Katy Alderson of KEQMS became the Year 8 individual champion with a record breaking run of 12.4s in the hurdles and a joint win with Sophie Riley from St. Bede's in the long jump. The runner up in the Year 8 competition was Holly Monteiro from Arnold who, in a close competition finished seven points behind the leader. Third place was shared between Kassidy Knight from Carr Hill and Lauren Gowland from St.Aidan's.

At the end of the meeting a trophy is awarded each year to the Year 9 team that has improved its performance the most from the previous year. The winners this year were Carr Hill School from Kirkham.

Organiser of the event Miss De Miranda was delighted with the number of girls who had competed and with both the effort and the standard of performance. She highlighted the athletics talent in the area and the effort that all the girls had made especially in the challenging 800m which was the final event in a hard competition.
