Election Fever
In a week that saw the nation gripped by election fever, Mr Golding masterminded Arnold's version of the General Election. No Hung Parliament for us; David Cameron would have been delighted with the massive share of the vote that Arnold's Conservatives won under the leadership of Jack McGuiness of the L6. Mr Golding told me that he had been hugely impressed by the engagement with the election from the pupils. On Thursday he took on the role of 'in-house' pundit, teaching 'history in the making' and fielding some tremendously mature questions from his classes and, indeed, from pupils who simply stopped him on the corridors...another example of Arnold School pupils demonstrating just how exceptional they really are!
I went out to watch some of the cricket and tennis this morning in what felt like freezing temperatures for this time of year. Although the sun was shining it hardly seems that this is the "Summer Term". Despite the cold we have had some good results recently and Mr Evans has got the cricket teams up and running.
Our hockey successes continue. I heard from the girls last evening that our U13 team finished 5th in the National Finals in Nottingham. Well done to them, especially as they had to do without the injured Ellie Greenhalgh, potentially one of our very best players.
Friday saw us commemorating the founding of the school by Frank Pennington. It was a great pleasure to welcome the Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Reverend Nicholas Reade, to preach to us, as well as all those members of the wider Arnold community who helped us make it a special occasion. This was followed on Friday evening by the P&F Spanish Evening, which was another success. Many thanks to Mrs Atkins and her team who work so hard to make events like this happen.
I think you all know how proud I am of our music and we had two lovely musical occasions last week. On Wednesday Mrs Cave and her colleagues from the Choral Society held a very nice send off for Mr Ross and Mrs Townsend, which featured some lovely singing from the Choir, and earlier in the day we staged a "Music Assembly" to let the school hear just what talent we have got amongst our musicians. Tom Hammond stole the show with some wonderful singing and he was ably backed by Got Soul and Faye Shearer, Catherine Lusher and Amy Clark as backing singers.
Our Juniors begin their trips to the Lake District next week and we wish them well. This space is going to be filled with their reports and pictures for a little while so we can all see how they are doing.
Kind regards
Barry Hughes
