April 29th

Detailed discussions continue to take place between Arnold Governors, myself and representatives of UCST with the intention of completing the alliance on 1st June. In recent weeks we have had visits from the Trust's ICT experts and we expect to see significant investment in our facilities over the summer.  Alongside this will be greatly enhanced training in the use of the new technology to improve teaching and learning.  We also soon expect to start the strategic review that will inform how we will use the expected multi million pound investment in the School.  More news in due course.

It is 70 years since the death of our founder, Frank Pennington and on Friday we hold our traditional Founder's Day service.  It is remarkable to think that he arrived in Blackpool in 1880 with only £5 to his name and that today Arnold is the school that it is; we owe him a great debt.  All parents are most welcome to attend the service - perhaps you would let us know if you do intend to come so that we can make sure seats are available.  Coffee will be available for guests from 10am in the Dining Room.

May I ask parents to be vigilant with regard to their son or daughter's use of the internet.  Facebook, MSN and the like continue to cause problems here, as they do in every school, and we would appreciate your support in reinforcing the message we send out with regard to responsible use of these things.

In assembly today I presented prizes to members of the L6th following their success in the Fylde Area Final of the Young Enterprise Competition.  "Emerald" (one of our Young Enterprise Companies) gave a sterling account of themselves finishing as runners up in a closely fought competition and also winning the prize for Innovation.

Our games players had a very good weekend, not least the young hockey players, and the various match reports are worth a read.

We also had good news from the Biology Challenge competition, the junior version of the British Biology Olympiad for Year 9 and Year 10 pupils throughout the country.  Almost 4000 pupils took part in the competition and several Arnoldians did very well indeed.  Pride of place goes to Robert Brocklehurst who was awarded one of only 36 Gold Medals and came 12th overall!  Very well done to him.

Our Year 11 and the 6th Form students continue to work hard with their revision and examination preparation and there are several useful revision websites linked to this site that they are encouraged to use. (See the link below)

Kind regards

Barry Hughes
