U16 Basketball season 2011/12 - Mr Bleakley reports
The season began with a trip to Fleetwood to play Cardinal Allen HS. Some of our team were having their first experience of competitive basketball and the pace of the game caught them out. We were a dozen points down in no time, and at the half we trailed by 18 points. The team came out for the third quarter determined to improve, and from then on looked the better side. We looked after the ball much better and made more passes on each possession, with Jonny Hyde helping Mitch Bolus run the offense. Declan Humphries was a dominating presence near the baskets and Dan Lee gained confidence as the game wore on. Even so, we ended up losing 34:14, and the minibus was quiet on the way home...
Our second match was at home to Garstang HS. Lessons learned, we started at a frantic pace and led 9:6 at the end of the first quarter. Playing quickly can put people out of position defensively, and we let the opposition have the ball too cheaply in the second quarter. By half-time we were a point down. The third quarter opened with a 3-pointer from Captain Bolus, but it would be our only score in 10 minutes. We were outscored 8:4 over the rest of the game to lose 24:26. Even so, it was an extremely exciting and hard-fought game. Ben Cheston and Owen Burrows impressed with their energy and determination, whilst Dan Lee and Jonny Hyde got the ball more effectively down court and to Mitch Bolus. As always Declan Humphries was a rock at both ends.
Our third match of the season took us back to Fleetwood, this time to Rossall School. Rossall beat last year's U16 team in the League Final so this was always going to be tough. To add to our difficulties, we had four players missing!
In the tight confines of Rossall's gym, the home team were dominant offensively despite Declan's robust attempts to stop them scoring. Even so, we still managed to worry them when we had the ball. The combination of Dan Lee and Ben Cheston managed to cut through almost at will. Jonny Hyde and Michael Hatton both had stand-out games, really imposing themselves and playing with confidence and freedom for the first time. Declan was, again, the best player from either side near to the basket, and Michael Cotton chipped in with some important rebounds. We lost the game 67:20, but many teams have been nowhere near this competitive against Rossall, and we can now look forward to the remaining three games against slightly less skilful opposition.
