Mr Hughes was born and brought up in Cumbria and after university took up a post as a research and development chemist with British Nuclear Fuels at Sellafield. Two years later he switched to teaching and was appointed as a teacher of chemistry and mathematics at a large maintained secondary school in Birmingham . He came to Arnold from Dauntsey's School in Wiltshire where he was Deputy Headmaster. Prior to that he had run his own department at Kelly College in Devon where he was also Head of Lower School and Housemaster of a senior boarding house.
