Mr Hughes was born and brought up in Cumbria.  He graduated from university with a first class honours degree in Applied Chemistry, from where he joined British Nuclear Fuels at Sellafield as a research and development chemist. Unfulfilled by life in research, after two years he became a teacher and was appointed to a large maintained secondary school in Birmingham where he taught chemistry and mathematics, coached rugby and athletics and became Head of House and Head of Year.

Mr Hughes came to Arnold from Dauntsey's School in Wiltshire where he was Deputy Headmaster. Prior to that he had run his own department at Kelly College in Devon where he was also Head of Lower School and Housemaster of a senior boarding house.  Mr Hughes is married with three sons.
