Art

Head of Department: Mrs H Caunce

Any visitor to a kindergarten or nursery is sure to see lots of painting, playing and making, with children using their natural creative talents and imagination.

This usually guarantees that there will be lots of happy, smiling faces. We try to maintain that feeling in the Art department. Situated within the Design Centre, where much cross-curricular work takes place, we have one room for three dimensional work, one for two dimensional, and a photographic dark room. This allows individual teachers space for flexibility, and the opportunity to make particular use of their individual skills and interests.

There are a lot of ways in which Art can be studied, be it Drawing and Painting, Ceramics and Sculpture, Photography and Film, Textiles, Printmaking, Graphics, computer graphics and animation, and in the Sixth Form, Life classes. Gone are the days when art was just about drawing a picture! We aim to stimulate an interest in the arts generally and to encourage analytical skills, and decisions making. Pupils are encouraged to communicate ideas, opinions and feeling about their own work and that of others, whilst at the same time developing their ability for imaginative and original thought, and experimentation - hopefully still with happy, smiling faces!
