Designing our future
As part of a Year 9 architecture topic pupils attended a presentation on sustainable buildings given by a representative from Scott Wilson, a multi-disciplinary international design and engineering consultancy firm. In advance of the presentation the pupils produced designs for a functional, contemporary building. During the presentation the guest speaker and pupils discussed sustainable materials and technology and considered what to incorporate in their eco friendly design. The event was inspiring and all our pupils thoroughly embraced the concepts.
Scott Wilson were so impressed with the response and genuine enthusiasm shown by the pupils that they offered to run a competition alongside the pupils' final design with the award of vouchers to the winners. The winner of the eco friendly design was Alexander Evans who incorporated geothermal energy, ground heat exchange and funicular railways in his luxury chalet design. Alexander was closely followed by Sophie Akhtar whose Dubai based restaurant included a sustainable plastic roof, wind turbines and grey water recycling. In third place was Charlotte Evans whose challenging design of a sports complex included sustainable resources such as a green roof, solar panels and recycled materials.
This was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to promote the value of Art and Design to a wider audience.
