Pupils of all ages welcomed a special guest into the school in celebration of our joining the United Church Schools Trust. Lord Carey of Clifton, Archbishop of Canterbury for 11 years until 2002 and currently Chairman of UCST, expressed his delight at the welcome he received.
‘This is a very happy school and my wife and I have been immensely impressed with the positive atmosphere and the range of activities we have seen. I knew Arnold to be a good school and this visit has strengthened that impression.’
The visit started with an assembly in the Junior School with Lord Carey talking about the ways in which Trust membership will help to extend and support the already diverse Arnold community. After seeing Reception children working, and Year 3 and Year 6 classes using our new interactive classroom technology, the visitors toured the Senior School and took part in lessons with older students.
Lord and Lady Carey were in the company of the Deputy Mayor of Blackpool, Councillor Valerie Haynes and her Consort, husband Alan Haynes, as well as the Bishop of Lancaster, the Rt Rev Bishop Geoffrey Pearson. Mr Hughes, welcomed Lord Carey before the assembled Senior School and referred to the town’s entrepreneurial spirit, a spirit reflected in the history of a school which can claim Sir William Lyons, founder of Jaguar Cars and Chris Lowe, one half of the Pet Shop Boys, as former pupils.
The Headmaster concluded by saying: ‘We are pleased to say that Arnold has a proud past and that in partnership with UCST the school has an even brighter future’.
